Malindi town is approximately 120 kilometers north of Mombasa and 600 kilometers from Nairobi city. It is the district headquarters of Malindi district. Since the elevation of Malindi to a district,

The DI covers Langobaya location, subdivided into four sub locations namely Malanga, Makobeni, Mkondoni and Langobaya
Malindi Development Initiative was started in 1997. It is situated in Langobaya location of Malindi District Malindi Division of Coast Province of Kenya. The DI covers Langobaya location, subdivided into four sub locations namely Malanga, Makobeni, Mkondoni and Langobaya. Giriama.
The population for the area is approximated at 15000 persons (1999 National Census).

Thematic Interventions

Water: Availing clean portable water at reduced distance has been one of the main priorities of the DI. At its inception, the existing water points were temporary and dried up due to continued failure of rain. Women had to walk long distances (about 8km one way) in search of the commodity, opening opportunity for abuse and exploitation by men
enroute to water points.

Education: AAIK initiatives in the DI have been aimed at increasing the enrolment, retention and transition to secondary schools. These have been usefully combined with
advocacy and infrastructure improvement.
The strategy has been to make education accessible to all by reducing the walking distance to schools to attract more children into the schools and device mechanisms of retaining them.

Livelihood security: food security and improving household incomes has been key in the DI. Many of the households in the DI rely on the irregular rains to do subsistence farming. The area has been a regular target for Government relief food for a number of years due to continued failure of rains.

The DI has initiated activities to exploit the irrigation potential of Galana River to ensure food access all year round. AAIK campaigns have focused on mobilizing the communities and the farmer groupings to demand for their rights to land and compensation on issues related to human wildlife.

HIV and AIDS: building community institutions capacity to manage the HIV and AIDS pandemic, offer VCT and counseling services.

Gender: creating an enabling environment to allow both women and women participate equally in development matters.

Child rights: coordinated action in responding to cases of violation and abuse.
